Eft - What is emotional freedom therapy tapping, and does it work?
EFT is a tapping method known as Emotional Freedom Therapy. It helps quickly change how someone sees things and deals with emotions. In a typical EFT session with a trained practitioner, the session involves counseling following EFT protocols. Tapping will then address the emotional responses related to the discussed issues and help clear them.
An emotional Freedom Therapy Tapping therapist will guide their client through a process of tapping on acupuncture points gently. This process triggers a relaxation response that helps in the processing of unresolved emotions. The therapist then guides the client towards a sense of release and clarity, which in turn helps in better decision-making. While anything the client needs to learn from the experience is retained, they are able to separate and leave behind any associated trauma or emotional disturbance.
Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a therapy that effectively addresses issues such as anxiety, depression, unhealthy habits, smoking, compulsive behaviours, fear of failure, perfectionism, PTSD, phobias, and low self-esteem.
The diagram below indicates the points where the client and practitioner gently tap during the session. The tapping is done with the index and middle finger and can be done with either hand; some clients like to use both hands.
Emotional Freedom Tapping delivers fast results and works beautifully in conjunction with Hypnosis, which is why I often combine the two therapies in my sessions. I use EFT in the first part of the session to reduce immediate symptoms and Hypnosis to embed the positive transformation that is being set up to take place.

Understanding the Science Behind EFT
Over the past decades, research has shed light on the mechanisms underlying EFT's effectiveness. At its core, Emotional Freedom Therapy operates on the principle of stimulating the body's energy meridians, as recognised in traditional Chinese medicine, while simultaneously addressing emotional distress through verbal affirmation.
The Evidence Speaks: Studies on EFT
Numerous studies have explored the effectiveness of EFT across a spectrum of emotional challenges, from anxiety and depression to PTSD and phobias. Here's a glimpse into some compelling findings:
Anxiety and Stress Reduction: Research published in the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease found that EFT significantly reduced anxiety levels in a group of adults after just six sessions. Participants reported sustained improvement even six months post-treatment.
Trauma Recovery: A study published in Psychological Trauma: Theory, Research, Practice, and Policy demonstrated the effectiveness of EFT in reducing symptoms of PTSD among veterans. Results showed a significant decrease in symptoms such as hyperarousal and intrusive thoughts.
Pain Management: EFT has also shown promise in alleviating physical discomfort. A study in the Energy Psychology Journal revealed that individuals suffering from chronic pain experienced notable reductions in pain severity and frequency following EFT interventions.
Depression Relief: In a randomised controlled trial published in Depression and Anxiety, participants with moderate to severe depression who underwent EFT sessions exhibited marked improvements compared to those receiving standard care alone.
